The Newcastle United squad could look very different come February 2nd, or it could look exactly the same.
That is the fragile state that Newcastle currently find themselves in, with profit and sustainability rules hindering their ability to sign new players.
It means that the Magpies must sell before they buy, which could result in multiple changes at St James’ Park before the January transfer window closes.
That has led to concern that a major name could leave the club. Some of Newcastle’s biggest stars have been linked with moves away from Tyneside, at a time when Eddie Howe‘s squad is already stretched enough as it is.
But while the fear of a major exit might become a reality during the summer, it is not expected to come to fruition at the start of 2024.

Bruno Guimaraes and more staying at Newcastle this month
The Athletic have provided an update on Newcastle’s January transfer window plans, and have named six major players who are ‘expected’ to remain on Tyneside beyond the current window.
They state that Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sven Botman are all expected to continue as Newcastle United players for the rest of the season.
Of the six players mentioned, it includes our four most valuable stars and two of the most experienced members of the squad. While letting Trippier or Wilson leave might make sense from a financial perspective right now, losing them could be really damaging.
As for the other four, they should be the spine of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United. Isak, Bruno and Botman certainly are, and they have since been joined by Gordon, who has taken his game to a whole new level this season.
Those are four players who would cost a huge amount of money right now, so it is understandable why one of them might go in the summer. The leading candidate appears to be Bruno, with the midfielder having a £100million release clause in his contract.
But that will be a problem for the summer. Right now, it does not look like there will be a major exit from St James’ Park. That is excellent news, as we look to salvage the 2023/24 season before rebuilding ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
