William Osula took his chance with both hands and starred in Newcastle United’s win over Birmingham City.

Just days after reaching the Carabao Cup final, Newcastle United continued their FA Cup campaign with a dramatic 3-2 win over Birmingham City on Saturday evening.

As expected, Eddie Howe made changes against Birmingham with several key players needing a rest after the win over Arsenal.

It provided a big opportunity for William Osula, who signed for £10m this summer from Sheffield United. The 21-year-old has had to be patient while waiting for his chance but his impressive display at St Andrew’s suggests he has a bright future ahead of him.

Osula starred on the right wing for Newcastle and picked up two assists. After the full-time whistle, Anthony Elanga sent Osula a message on social media, praising him for his display.

Newcastle United received deadline day William Osula offer

During the January transfer window, Newcastle waved goodbye to Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, who left for Atlanta United and Juventus respectively.

Kelly joined Juventus on loan, joining a list of 10 Newcastle players on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Newcastle also received a loan offer for William Osula over the winter window.

On deadline day, the La Liga side reportedly submitted a loan offer for the Danish striker as they looked for a last-minute solution to their lack of forward options.

The offer was rejected by Newcastle, with Osula staying put at St James’ Park for the second half of the season. Howe showed why he wanted to keep hold of him on Saturday evening.

What Eddie Howe has said about William Osula

Newcastle wanted to sign a new right winger in January, and that only heightened once Almiron left to re-join the MLS.

Thankfully, Jacob Murphy has been in fine form this season, but there is a worrying lack of depth in that position behind him.

However, Osula starred on the wing against Birmingham, suggesting he could be a solution to Newcastle’s right-wing dilemma.

After the full-time whistle, Howe praised Osula for his pace, suggesting it is one of his key traits.

“I thought Will was a real outlet for us,” Howe said. “His pace, strength and directness were key for us in that first half, finding our way back into the game.

“He’s still got some areas of his game that need development, but he’s certainly moving in the right direction and I thought he was unlucky not to score.

“I think he can play any of the front three positions. I think anything that showcases his pace, I think that’s his best asset. You saw that with his direct running.

“I think he’s got goals in him, I think he’s a natural goal scorer. There’s a few rough edges we need to improve, keep working and developing him, but he’s a massive player for us now.”

A massive player, who could yet have a massive impact for the rest of the season.
