The links between Newcastle United and Kees Smit will not go away, but there’s one condition that will lead to the Magpies signing the young Dutchman.
It is no secret that Eddie Howe wants a new midfielder this month. Despite the main trio of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes being among the best in the league, there is scope for improvement.
If not Kees Smit, which midfielder should Newcastle sign in January?
The Magpies are entering a new era in many ways, and the time to refresh is now. But, among all the midfielder targets for Newcastle in the January window, Kees Smit may be the most ambitious and most expensive of them all.
Reports and rumours around the youngster have varied between the club looking to sign him as soon as possible to the idea that Newcastle will have to wait until the summer. Now, we know a lot more about that situation.

Joe Willock move would spark bid for Kees Smit
According to a new report from The Athletic, it’s said Newcastle are indeed keen on Smit but it all depends on what happens to Joe Willock this month.
Apparently, the Magpies will only bid for the AZ Alkmaar starlet if Willock departs, but it’s thought he is “more likely to stay” at this stage.
Leeds United have shown interest in Willock and Crystal Palace were also suggested as a potential destination for the midfielder.
However, Eddie Howe is reluctant to let experienced first-team players leave, especially given the current injury crisis at Newcastle.
How much money would a club need to bid for you to consider selling Joe Willock in January?
Can Newcastle afford to wait for Kees Smit?
At the end of 2025, Kees Smit suggested he would be staying at AZ Alkmaar until the summer. The problem is, a number of elite clubs are now paying attention to his talents.
It’s thought Smit would cost at least £53m this month. Given his massive potential and rate of development, there’s every reason to believe a bidding war could erupt in the summer that would push that price up even higher.
If Newcastle are serious about signing Smit, it may be a case of now or never, lest they be priced out of the move entirely in six months’ time.
