Newcastle United know they face competition to sign Matheus Cunha this summer.

The 25-year-old is a man in demand, with Matheus Cunha likely to leave Wolves.

He signed a new contract at Molineux earlier this year, but the deal includes a £62.5million release clause which will likely result in his departure.

Newcastle are interested in Cunha, after being linked with him in January. It is claimed that he is one of the Magpies’ top targets, but Paul Mitchell will face competition for his signature.

Nottingham Forest are also interested, having tried to sign him during the January transfer window.

While a deal did not happen, Forest’s interest in Cunha has remained. They are still in the mix to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and the Brazilian would be a statement signing if they are able to finish in the top five.

According to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Forest are currently more likely to sign Cunha from Wolves than Newcastle United.

“He’s going to leave, his people are doing work on it,” he told Geordie Boot Boys.

“Forest are one of the leading candidates to sign him this summer. I would probably make them favourites as it stands. They’ve done work on him, and tried to sign him in January. They’re prepared to pay what it takes.

“Newcastle United like him as well, and have done for a long time.”

Unclear where Matheus Cunha would fit in at Newcastle

Cunha has been exceptional in the Premier League this season, resulting in excitement from the Toon Army that Eddie Howe is considering signing him.

However, some Newcastle fans are unsure where Cunha would fit in.

That view is shared by Bailey, who thinks Newcastle could find a player who is more suited to their needs for similar money.

“Some teams have had red flags about Cunha’s behaviour,” he said.

“I’m not totally convinced he would be an Eddie Howe style signing. He is a high reward, high risk signing.

“It’s not clear where he would fit in at Newcastle either. If they keep Isak, would they play Cunha on the right? For around £60million, I think there are better options. You could go get Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.”
