‘Terrific’ Newcastle player knows who he wants to sign for this summer, Magpies are happy to sell

Newcastle United need to get rid of some of their fringe players this summer, and it looks like they have a golden chance to do exactly that.

There needs to be a bit of an overhaul at St James’ Park in the coming months, as Newcastle United prepare for a season without European football. While the Toon project is still heading in the right direction, there needs to be some difficult decisions made.

That means saying goodbye to some important members of the squad, with the likes of Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett facing uncertain futures. We could also see Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson be sold, which is vital if it means keeping stars like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.

But while it is unclear what the future holds for some Newcastle United players, it is a different case for Ryan Fraser.

Ryan Fraser ready for Newcastle United to sell him

The 30-year-old winger has spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Southampton, helping them win promotion back to the Premier League. They beat Leeds United in the playoff final on Sunday, with former Toon player Adam Armstrong scoring the winner.

He is on his way back to the top flight with the Saints, and that is also where Fraser is hoping to be.

According to the Times, Fraser wants to make his loan move permanent and sign for Southampton.

They add that Newcastle are happy to sell the Scotland international, which is no surprise as he heads into the final year of his Toon contract.

He is not wanted at St James’ Park after falling out with Eddie Howe, and this will be seen as a great opportunity to get him off the wage bill.

Southampton’s promotion is great for Newcastle United

That is why it was so important that Southampton won at Wembley on Sunday. Had they fell short in the playoff final, they would have been much less likely to sign Fraser permanently.

But the Saints got over the line, and now Russell Martin has the chance to ensure Fraser remains at St Mary’s. You would like to think he is keen for that to happen, having used the speedster on 44 occasions this season. During that time, Fraser scored eight goals and provided three assists.

He has looked much more at home in a Southampton shirt, and he is unsurprisingly desperate to remain on the south coast. If not, he will need to find another employer, as there is no way he will be getting another chance at Newcastle United.

Fraser was banished to the reserves at the beginning of 2023, with Howe not wanting him around the first-team after a fall out. The Scot was praised for being ‘absolutely terrific‘ as he worked with the kids, but it was never going to lead to a return to the senior side.

Now it looks like both parties have a perfect chance to finally say goodbye to each other. Newcastle don’t want Fraser, and Fraser doesn’t want Newcastle. Southampton look braced to save the day, as they prepare to return to the Premier League next season.
