Newcastle United players are licking their wounds this morning after yesterday’s terrible 5-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe’s side crashed to a third straight defeat in the Premier League in north London.

After taking the lead through a Fabian Schar free-kick, Newcastle just fell apart.

Ben Davies equalised and then, in the second-half, Spurs really turned it on and Newcastle just couldn’t cope.

The Magpies were second-best all over the park as Harry Kane and Heung-min Son ran the show.

There was some extremely poor defending on show from the visitors, which was surprising to see.

The other goals came from Spurs two wing-backs Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, with Son also on target.

And there was also a goal for Steven Bergwijn, who had been on the pitch only a matter of minutes after replacing Royal.

He collected a through ball from Lucas Moura and produced a deadly accurate finish into the bottom corner past Martin Dubravka.

And straight after that, he almost got a second, firing just over with a half-volley.

Bergwijn is a player who was linked with a loan move to Newcastle during the January window.

The Netherlands international doesn’t play all that much for Spurs these days, and now has more competition in the form of Dejan Kulusevski.

Steven Bergwijn could be a great addition for Newcastle

Spurs have a lot of quality attacking players. So it’s difficult for Bergwijn to be starting games.

The arrival of Kulusevksi has not been good for him. It’s very possible he’ll seek to move on this summer.

And if that’s the case then Newcastle should get involved.

Bergwijn is a livewire, and could well thrive if given the chance to become a regular starter elsewhere.

Newcastle need to bring in some better wide options in the summer. And the 24-year-old would be an upgrade on the likes of Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron and maybe even Ryan Fraser.
