Newcastle United will benefit from signing someone like Fraser Forster this summer.

With Newcastle United back in the Champions League, there is a fresh spotlight on homegrown players who have come through the club’s academy.

As it stands, Sean Longstaff is the only Toon player who will contribute towards the Magpies’ UEFA quota.

When they submit their squad for the Champions League, there must be four players who are club-trained. If they are not able to do that, they will be punished by UEFA and forced to name a smaller squad.

Right now, Newcastle United would only be able to name a 22-man Champions League squad, as they are three players short of the required amount of club-trained talents.

They are trying to rectify that, with Newcastle interested in Fraser Forster and Tim Krul.

They both came through the Newcastle United academy and are going to be available on free transfers.

What Fraser Forster said about playing for Newcastle United in 2023

When it comes to Forster, he would surely jump at the chance to re-sign for Newcastle United.

In fact, it was only two years ago that the goalkeeper admitted how desperate he is to play for Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

During an interview with the Times in 2023, Forster named the one change he would like to make to his career.

“If I could have had one thing in my career so far it would have been to have played one game for them at St James’ Park,” he said.

“To be a Newcastle fan, that’s every kid’s dream, to play at St James’, in front of 52,000. There as well it means so much being a Geordie and playing for Newcastle.

“That’s one thing I wish I could change.”

What happened after Fraser Forster left Newcastle United

Born in Hexham, Forster joined Newcastle United when he was 15-years-old.

Unfortunately, the 37-year-old never made a senior appearance for the Magpies. He spent most of his Toon career on loan, representing Stockport County, Bristol Rovers, Norwich City and Celtic.

It was Celtic who Forster would sign for permanently, leaving Newcastle in 2012 for £2million.

The goalkeeper was incredibly successful up in Scotland, before Southampton gave him his big chance in the Premier League.

Forster made 162 appearances for the Saints, while he also won six England caps.

He has spent the last three seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, but it has been announced that he will be released when his contract expires at the end of June.
