Newcastle United may be on red alert, with Sporting CP reportedly ready to buy a replacement for Matheus Nunes.

According to Record, the Portuguese champions are lining up Manuel Ugarte.

The Lions are said to be looking at the Famalicão player, if Nunes departs the club this summer.

Newcastle’s previous interest is brought up in the story.

The Magpies apparently looked at the 22-year-old back in January.

But Sporting’s focus on their title charge is cited as a reason Newcastle’s interest was not entertained.

He could end up departing during the next window though in order to get more game time.

Nunes made 31 appearances in Liga NOS in 2020/21, but most of his appearances were as a substitute.

His representatives are apparently due to speak with Sporting officials next week about the next step for their client.

Newcastle can probably do better

Really, Newcastle need to be making central midfield a priority this summer.

The club need a marquee signing, someone to come in and be an upgrade on Jonjo Shelvey.

Nunes has potential but maybe Newcastle need to be pushing the boat out a bit further.
