Newcastle United have reportedly seen a loan bid for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes rejected.
Portuguese publication O Jogo reported this morning that the Magpies made an approach to sign the Brazilian for the remainder of the season and were even willing to including a £10 million buy option.
But the offer was promptly rejected by Sporting, who see Nunes are a key player to their squad.
He hasn’t been a regular starter for the Portuguese giants, but has made 22 appearances in all competitions so far in 2020/21.
Supposedly Sporting are closing the door to any teams hoping to land Nunes.
The report will likely will be another source of frustration for many Newcastle supporters, who are desperate to see their club do something with the winter transfer window closing in the coming days.
Steve Bruce suggested at his press conference that the club had some things ‘bubbling away’, and one wonders if Nunes was one of those.
It seems Newcastle’s recruitment team will now need to look elsewhere to deliver Bruce the loan midfielder is has admitted to wanting.
Realistically it is hardly a shock that Sporting rejected Newcastle’s proposal for Nunes.
They are going really well in Liga NOS in 2020/21 and are actually yet to lose a league game so far.
They currently sit top of the league after 14 games played, and potentially stand a great chance of sealing a first title since 2002.
In order to do that they need to keep their squad together, and Nunes could be an important squad player going forwards.
