‘Sources expect’: 24-year-old who NUFC considered signing will now be sold in January – Romano

If Newcastle United want another chance to sign Trevoh Chalobah then they will get one in January.

The Magpies were heavily linked with signing a centre-back during the summer transfer window, but Eddie Howe was unable to get the player he wanted.

The Toon boss was keen for the club to bring in someone who could eventually replace Fabian Schar, whilst also being better on the ball than Jamaal Lascelles. However, finances meant that a deal did not happen.

One player who Newcastle did consider signing was Chelsea defender Chalobah. The 24-year-old was linked with a move to St James’ Park, with the Blues eager to get rid of their academy graduate.

Chelsea were expected to see Chalobah, but he actually remained at Stamford Bridge. There was talk of deadline day moves to either Nottingham Forest or Bayern Munich, but Chalobah stayed put.

That looks like it is going to be a mistake, as the centre-back is most certainly surplus to requirements in West London.

And a new update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano states that a move is on the horizon as soon as the window reopens.

Chelsea are going to sell Trevoh Chalobah in January

According to Romano on Twitter, Chalobah is going to leave Chelsea during the January transfer window.

He wrote: “Trevoh Chalobah rejected Nottingham Forest move on Deadline Day because he wanted to join Bayern; then his preference was to stay at Chelsea despite £25m deal agreed between clubs. He’ll fight for his place but sources expect Chalobah to leave the club in January.”

Chalobah can fight for his place all he likes, but it looks like he has no future at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino.

They want rid, and will be disappointed that he did not go during the summer window. His fate appears to be sealed, with Romano already stating that he is going to leave Stamford Bridge at the beginning of next year.

Whether or not that tempts Newcastle to reignite their interest remains to be seen. He is young enough that he fits the Magpies’ transfer profile, but the fact that the club didn’t go all in during the summer when he was clearly available suggests that he is not Howe’s top target.

Newcastle will sign a centre-back in 2024, and Chalobah will be sold by Chelsea. However, it would be a real surprise if this ends in Chalobah signing for the Magpies midway through the current season.

While he might be a decent player, it feels like Newcastle will target someone with a lot more potential, rather than a Premier League rival’s deadwood.
