Newcastle United or Manchester United – that is the decision that Benjamin Sesko must make.

Both Premier League clubs are trying to sign Benjamin Sesko, as they attempt to secure a new striker before the summer transfer window closes.

Sesko is not Man United’s first choice yet, with Ruben Amorim’s side also keen on Ollie Watkins. In contrast, Sesko is Newcastle’s top target to potentially replace Alexander Isak.

Toon fans are nervously waiting to discover whether or not they will be able to sign the Slovenian, at a time when the Magpies are desperate for a new forward to arrive.

Newcastle United more likely to sign Benjamin Sesko right now

The 2025 summer transfer window has been dominated by Newcastle United missing out on key targets, such as Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike.

With Man United keen, the fear will be that Sesko joins that list. However, luck might actually be on Eddie Howe’s side in this instance.

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United are currently more likely to sign Sesko than Manchester United. That is according to ‘sources close to negotiations’.

That is not to say that Newcastle United will strike a deal. There is still obviously time for things to change and Man United to force their way to the front of the queue.

However, the current state of play is certainly encouraging as the Magpies aim to sign a player they have wanted since 2022.

Man United are not the only reason Newcastle United need to move fast for Benjamin Sesko

The threat of Man United obviously increases the urgency for Newcastle to strike a deal with RB Leipzig.

However, there is another factor at play that must hurry the Magpies along.

As soon as Newcastle United sell Alexander Isak, every player they target will likely become more expensive. Clubs will know they suddenly have more money at their disposal, as well as even more desperation to find reinforcements.

To counter that, Newcastle have to secure Isak’s replacement before letting him go. That will mean a big financial outlay, but it is something they were prepared to do for Hugo Ekitike before that situation unravelled.

There is a real need for Newcastle United to move fast with Sesko, but that is concerning when you consider that speed is not something you would associate with the Toon recruitment team.
