Newcastle United were interested in signing Davide Frattesi in August, and he may just wish he had joined.
Eddie Howe wanted to bolster his Newcastle United midfield as Sean Longstaff departed for Leeds United.
Newcastle looked at Harvey Elliott, but ended up signing Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa instead.
Ramsey is still settling in at St James’ Park, but should play an important role in the coming years.
As the transfer window came towards its end, Newcastle were actually linked with one more midfield addition.

Davide Frattesi struggling at Inter Milan after Newcastle United interest
Reports suggested that Newcastle were interested in signing Davide Frattesi on loan from Inter Milan.
The Italian market has been kind to Newcastle in recent times, with both Malick Thiaw and Sandro Tonali impressing after arriving from AC Milan.
This time, Newcastle looked to raid their city rivals Inter, but no deal was done before the window closed.
Frattesi may still be on the Newcastle radar, and his lack of playing time at San Siro could spark renewed interest in 2026.
The 26-year-old has started just one Serie A game this season, coming off the bench in four more.
In total, Frattesi has played just 186 minutes of league action this season, and another 111 in two Champions League displays.
Remarkably, Frattesi hasn’t even hit the 300-minute mark in Inter’s two main competitions this season.
New Inter boss Cristian Chivu doesn’t appear to fancy Frattesi, who was given just 17 minutes off the bench in a 3-1 defeat at Napoli over the weekend.
Frattesi has World Cup aspirations, and kicking his heels on the Inter bench is not going to help his cause.
A January move may still be in mind for Frattesi, and Newcastle will surely keep close tabs on his situation.
Davide Frattesi urged to quit Inter Milan after Newcastle United interest
Frattesi is bound to have suitors if he does pursue a January move away from Inter.
Reporter Nando Orsi has now been quoted by InterLive as saying that Frattesi needs to leave San Siro.
Orsi questioned Frattesi’s decision to join Inter in the first place, highlighting the presence of fellow midfielder Nicolo Barella.
Orsi believes that Frattesi would play for any other Serie A team right now, and urged the midfielder to think of his playing time rather than his bank account.
“Frattesi made a choice by going to Inter, but he knew Barella was there. When Barella isn’t there, he plays; otherwise, he stays on the bench,” said Orsi.
“They even tried to play both of them with Barella at the top of the pitch, but it wasn’t a great choice.”
“Frattesi would play for any other Italian team other than Inter, and then he should ask himself a few questions. Leave Inter and go play, otherwise you’ll have a career in which you’ve earned a lot but played very little,” he added.
Italian clubs will be queuing up for Frattesi, and Howe must ponder whether to re-enter the race or stick with his current midfield options.
