Newcastle face Manchester United on Sunday, with the Magpies’ Scott McTominay interest creating an intriguing subplot at St James’ Park.

McTominay was heavily linked with a move to the North East during the January transfer window, but Manchester United turned down Newcastle’s approach.

Eddie Howe is still looking to sign a midfielder, and the club are reportedly planning to make a fresh attempt to sign the Scotland international.

He appears to be a major target for the Magpies, with Howe, Dan Ashworth and Steve Nickson all in agreement that he would be a good addition to the Toon squad. Pundit Danny Murphy agrees too, believing that McTominay is ‘perfect‘ for Newcastle.

The jury is still out for supporters, with many unsure about the 26-year-old moving to Tyneside ahead of next season.

He will be at St James’ Park on Sunday, and could change plenty of opinions with a strong showing for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Newcastle fans have the chance to watch Scott McTominay up close

A lot of Toon fans have scoffed at the idea of Howe signing McTominay this summer. However, the club’s recruitment has been good since the takeover and we should back the hierarchy’s judgement.

McTominay will need to win fans over if he does make the move, and he has a chance to inadvertently start doing that on Sunday.

While Newcastle are desperate to win to move back into the top four, a strong performance from the midfielder could change the sentiment towards him possibly joining the club.

He is likely to feature in some capacity, as Man United are going to be without Casemiro, who is suspended. That could give McTominay the chance to start, and he did just that in their previous game – the FA Cup triumph over Fulham.

McTominay will arrive at St James’ Park full of confidence, having scored four goals in two games for Scotland during the international break.

The main focus will be on supporting the team and getting three points, but some fans will be paying close attention to McTominay to see what he can really add to this Newcastle team. The Toon decision makers will be doing the same, as they get the chance to see if they are right about Man United’s number 39.
