Roma could be looking to sign a Newcastle United player this summer as the club looks to have a bit of an overhaul of the squad.
Several fringe players are expected to leave Newcastle in the next few months either with their contracts expiring or being moved on by the club to shift their wages off the books.
Loris Karius is one of those who will see his contract run out and a report from AS Roma Live now claims that the Italian club are considering bringing him in on a free transfer.
Karius departure will help Newcastle elsewhere
You’d struggle to find a more experienced third-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League than Karius who started in a Champions League final, but that is also surely the case when it comes to his wages.
The German international was brought in last season when Martin Dubravka asked to join Man United on loan, leaving Nick Pope as the only experienced first-team option in goal.
Although Dubravka did return in January, he was ineligible to play in the Carabao Cup final when Pope received a red card in the game prior to it, meaning Karius would step up to make his Newcastle debut at Wembley.
It was a clever move at the time, but Eddie Howe has preferred the Slovakian international over Karius since Pope got injured and it’s clear that he would like to leave for more first-team football, with Italy being his first choice.
Shifting his wages could be good for Newcastle who will of course have to look for a new backup shot-stopper, but will be able to use that money elsewhere in the squad.

Newcastle must learn to be more ruthless
This summer is going to be a pretty big one for the long-term future of Newcastle and those at the top are going to have to work hard to maximise the players they can bring in.
With these new rules that seem to be making thing stricter and harder to cope financially, Newcastle are in a tricky position with all the wealth in the world and no way to spend it.
One of the ways they can get around that, however, is moving on current players like Karius who are not playing regularly yet are sitting on significant wages or who can still be useful and therefore can recoup a decent fee.
They are already looking at the likes of Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron in terms of first-team players who are still valuable in the market but wouldn’t be a massive loss to the team next season.
Like Manchester City and Liverpool do every year, Newcastle must now be more ruthless in selling players if they are ever going to compete with their Premier League rivals.
