Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the future of on Newcastle United player who was close to leaving in January.

There were believed to be a number of offers for Callum Wilson in the latest transfer window with Atletico Madrid interested, but a move never materialised.

Now, speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that there has been no contact made from the Spanish club since, but that Wilson still faces an uncertain future at the club ahead of a big summer window.

Romano says Newcastle star may leave in the summer

Wilson has been one of the most consistent players under Eddie Howe when he’s been fit and available, scoring an average of around a goal in every other game and becoming their third top scorer in the Premier League.

However, at the age of 32 and with the injury record that he has, it would make more sense for Newcastle to cash in on the striker before he runs his contract out in 2025 and leaves for free.

Romano has admitted that there was definitely interest in the Newcastle forward back in January but it’s not clear if there’s going to be as much in the summer given his latest injury that will keep him out for another nine weeks.

Both Newcastle and Wilson have a big decision to make on if they want to keep him around to be third choice or if they should replace him altogether for a younger and fitter version.

On Wilson’s situation at Newcastle, Romano said: “Callum Wilson also seems to be in a slightly uncertain situation at Newcastle following a January saga involving Atletico Madrid. Still, Atletico Madrid are not currently in contact with Wilson or Newcastle.

“Their last contact was early January, and it was a clear no from Newcastle. So I’m not sure they will return, Atletico Madrid only considered that as an opportunity on loan for six months.”

Newcastle looking for a younger striker this summer

Newcastle are very fortunate in that they already have one of the best young strikers in world football with Alexander Isak who added to his tally against Wolves this weekend taking him to 14 for the season.

However, it’s not enough to rely solely on the talented Swede to push Newcastle back into the Champions League positions especially considering his poor injury record as well.

There have been several names mentioned in the last few months who Newcastle could target with the likes of Can Uzun, Serhou Guirassy, Dominic Solanke and more all linked.

Of course, it all depends on how much they have to spend, but should they lose Wilson it would likely become a huge priority for Howe to find a new backup striker as soon as possible.
