January transfers are going to be key for Newcastle United and their survival prospects.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League, sitting three points adrift of Watford in 17th. The gap isn’t huge, but it could get bigger amid Newcastle’s horrible run of fixtures.

Eddie Howe’s side face Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton before the transfer window opens. While we face some of the countries best sides (and Everton), our rivals will be looking to pull away from danger.

Newcastle’s position in the table will likely have a big impact on their January business. That’s why the win over Burnley was so pivotal.

It brought us back into the mix and proved their is still fight in us yet.

But how big an impact will Newcastle’s position in the table have on their January recruitment? According to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, it is already causing problems.

What’s been said?

Speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Waugh explained what the club has been told by some agents.

“My understanding is that a lot of agents who’ve been approached by Newcastle about their clients have tried to put them off for the last few weeks and said let’s wait and see where you are towards the end of the year, where you actually are come the start of the window,” Waugh said.

“And it’s very much looking like Newcastle will be in the relegation zone, potentially adrift by that stage after the next couple of games. That makes things even more difficult.”

Newcastle need to complete transfers fast in January

Newcastle’s squad needs reinforcements. It needed them in the summer, but that didn’t happen.

Instead, we’re having to wait until January where finally we have hope due to the completion of the Saudi-backed takeover.

But that hope is slightly diminished by the club’s position in the table. It seems very likely that we’ll be in the relegation zone when the transfer window swings open.

That’s going to make it tougher to tempt players to St James’ Park.

As Waugh suggested, some agents are already delaying any deals until Newcastle’s position in the table is clearer.

If we become cut adrift in the coming weeks, things could get even tougher.

The reality is that Newcastle need to make signings as soon as possible. But they aren’t going to arrive on January 1st. Signings may not arrive until later in the month.

Will that be too late? The Premier League future of Newcastle United is very much hanging in the balance, and the failures of those before are handicapping the new owners.
