Newcastle transfer news: Man United’s Scott McTominay keen on Toon move

Scott McTominay is reportedly open to leaving Manchester United and signing for Newcastle United during the January transfer window.

That is according to the Telegraph, who state that the 26-year-old is becoming concerned by his lack of minutes at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag.

The Scotland international is no longer a regular starter for the Red Devils. His last Premier League start came on October 2nd, when Man United lost 6-3 to rivals Manchester City.

Since then, McTominay has only made six Premier League appearances, all of which came off the bench.

That has led to frustration from the midfielder, which has inspired interest from Eddie Howe’s side.

Scott McTominay open to joining Newcastle as Howe eyes move

The Telegraph state that Newcastle will make a bid to sign McTominay if they are given encouragement that a deal is possible by Man United.

They add that McTominay has a lot of admirers at St James’ Park, with the Telegraph claiming that he is widely liked by the Newcastle management team.

So with Newcastle keen and McTominay open to a move to the North East, this could be a perfect storm. However, it is reliant on the Red Devils wanting to do a deal.

That feels unlikely, given the relationship between the two clubs. Man United refused to do Newcastle a favour this time last year, as Howe eyed a deal for Jesse Lingard. That was at a time when the Magpies weren’t a direct threat.

Fast forward 12 months and Howe’s side are above Man United in the table by goal difference, as both teams eye Champions League qualification.

To do that, Newcastle might need midfield reinforcements. Jonjo Shelvey is currently out injured, and Bruno Guimaraes could join him after an ankle problem forced him off against Fulham at the weekend.

However, given Man United’s stubbornness last season when dealing with Newcastle, it is very hard to imagine them allowing McTominay to join Howe’s side this month. That would potentially threaten their bid to finish in the top four and cost them a lot of money.

Newcastle are keen on McTominay. McTominay is keen on Newcastle. But it all depends on how keen Manchester United are on a deal. My bet would be ‘not very’…
