Report: Newcastle scouts were impressed by ‘special’ talent last week, club now eyeing January move

Newcastle United are now interested in signing Botafogo youngster Jeffinho, according to Brazilian outlet Mercado do Futebol.

As per the report, the Magpies join West Ham United and European heavyweight Ajax as parties who are keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old.

All three clubs were in attendance at the Brazilian Serie A on Thursday night as they looked to scout the winger, as Botafogo cruised to a 3-0 victory over Santos.

The Rio de Janeiro outfit do not want to sell the player unless they receive a large bid, so it is possible the Toon could make a quick swoop in January to beat West Ham and Ajax to his services.

This follows Newcastle’s keen interest in a number of other Brazilian talents, with the likes of Andrey Santos, Angelo Gabriel and Eguinaldo all having been touted as potential transfer options.

Having played the majority of his career as a winger, Jeffinho can also be used up front or even as a central midfielder. This versatility is said to be appealing for clubs, as the 22-year-old would be more than happy to fill-in at various positions when needed.

Since returning to Botafogo from a loan move this summer, the attacker has impressively made 40 appearances for the Brazilian club.

Although he cannot be deemed a wonderkid as he is set to turn 23 later this year, Jeffinho has really shone in the Serie A this season.

Labelled as a ‘very special’ player by journalist Camilo Pinheiro Machado, it is clear to see the youngster has huge potential. Ajax are known to have one of the best academies in the world, and if they are interested, the player is sure to have talent.

Therefore, we could see the Magpies make a move for Jeffinho in January, as the Tyneside scouts were very impressed by his performance against Santos last week.
