Newcastle United now lead the race to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to CalciomercatoWeb.
As per the report, the Magpies are deemed ‘the top candidates’ to land the 27-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Having failed to sign an extension with the Serie A outfit, the centre-back is expected to leave Inter in January, as the club look to cash-in on the player.
Tottenham are also interested in the Slovakia international, having been linked with a swoop since 2021.

The Toon are prepared to offer Skriniar a big-money offer in January, instead of waiting to acquire him on a free six months later, as Eddie Howe is keen to have the defender for the second half of the season.
As previously reported by L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain made a £70m offer for the Inter star in the summer transfer window, but a deal failed to come to fruition. Now, the Tyneside club could be in for a bargain.
Newcastle lead the race for Skriniar
This would be a massive signing for Newcastle if they can pull it off. Skriniar has long been considered one of the best centre-backs in world football, and his arrival on Tyneside would be a huge signal of intent.
The Slovakian has played every game for the Italian side this term, including all six matches in the Champions League. Overall, he has amassed 225 appearances in the Serie A – having gained a wealth of experience at the top level.
Described as a ‘monumental‘ player for his performance against Liverpool last season, Skriniar would surely be a great signing for the Toon.

Valued at £70m by PSG over the summer, if the Magpies can secure his transfer on a cut-price deal this winter, this would be incredible business by the club.
Therefore, Howe and co should do all they can to bring the defender to St James’ Park in January.
