Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid.

That is according to FootballTransfers, who believe that the Magpies are going to enter the race to sign the Portuguese forward.

Felix is currently at the World Cup with Portugal, preparing to face Morocco for a place in the semi finals. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a bright tournament so far, scoring one and providing two assists.

The World Cup has been a reminder of Felix’s incredible talent, having struggled to live up to the hype at Atletico Madrid. He joined Diego Simeone’s side in 2019, costing £113million.

That fee suggested he was going to become the next global star, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way.

Felix has been somewhat stifled by Simeone’s rigid and conservative tactics, and now he is being linked with a move away from the Metropolitano Stadium.

Newcastle are reportedly interested, with FootballTransfers claiming that Eddie Howe is keen to learn more about the player’s personality to see if he would be a good fit at St James’ Park.

However, the report adds that Manchester United is Felix’s most likely destination, as they search for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

But if Felix were to swap Atletico for Newcastle, he would be reunited with a familiar face.

Newcastle interested in Kieran Trippier’s old pal Joao Felix

As we previously stated, Felix joined Atletico in the summer of 2019. And so did Kieran Trippier. The right-back left Tottenham for Atletico in July 2019, costing £20million – a lot less than Felix’s move.

They played together for two and a half seasons, winning the La Liga title in 2021.

Trippier would then leave six months later, returning to England to join Newcastle United for £12million. He has been a revelation in black and white, and has arguably been the club’s most important player over the past 12 months.

So perhaps he could do Newcastle a favour and have a word with his old teammate Felix. He will certainly be able to give Howe an insight on the type of character he is.

Trippier has been outspoken about Felix’s talent, calling him a ‘very special player‘ after scoring against Manchester United in the Champions League back in February.

Based on his comments, Trippier would certainly approve of a move to bring Felix to Newcastle. However, it is best to err on the side of caution at this stage.

This isn’t necessarily the most reputable source, and a transfer to Newcastle would cost a huge amount of money. There would also be the battle of convincing him to move to the North East, which wouldn’t be easy.

Trippier might think Felix is a ‘special player’, but getting him to join Newcastle will take something really special from the owners.
