Report: Newcastle now interested in signing the ‘Hungarian Van Dijk’, he wants to leave in the summer

Newcastle United are interested in signing Fenerbahçe centre-back Attila Szalai, according to Türkiye Gazetesi.

The Turkish outlet reports the Magpies, Leicester City and West Ham United are all keen on landing the Hungary international.

Having established an elite partnership with Kim Min-jae in the heart of the Istanbul outfit’s defence, manager Jorge Jesus insisted the club should hold onto the 24-year-old, when his South Korean teammate was sold to Napoli.

However, to Jesus’ dismay, Türkiye Gazetesi claim Newcastle join Leicester and West Ham, alongside Serie A side Bologna, in the race to secure his signature.

It’s said Szalai has a Premier League move ‘in his heart’, and that he hopes to leave Fenerbahçe at the end of this season.

Newcastle want to sign Szalai

Hailed by journalist Ben Bocsak as the ‘Hungarian Van Dijk’, it is no wonder the Magpies are keeping a close eye on the centre-back.

Across the Super Lig, Europa League and continental qualifying this season, the 24-year-old has played 25 games thus far this term.

When compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, Szalai ranks in the top 20 percent for expected assisted goals and progressive passes made.

Earning statistical comparisons to former Chelsea and current Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen, the Hungary international would sure be able to cope with the intensity of the Premier League.

Although Eddie Howe seems very happy with his current partnership of Sven Botman and Fabian Schar, there is always room to add quality in depth to a squad in pursuit of Champions League qualification.

Although his Fenerbahçe contract runs until 2025, the fact he wants to leave in the summer should play into Newcastle’s favour.

Therefore, if Howe does decide to pull the trigger on a new centre-back, Szalai would be a brilliant addition at St James’ Park.
