Newcastle continue to be linked with a number of centre-backs following a terrible start to the 2021/22 season.

Only Norwich City have conceded more goals so far in the Premier League, and Eddie Howe needs new recruits to bolster his backline.

Sven Botman won’t be joining, but Diego Carlos remains heavily linked. And there have been more mentions of James Tarkowski.

Apparently, Newcastle are also now showing interest in Szalai, who is valued at around £16.7 million by the Turkish giants.

Szalai, 23, has only been with his current club for a year, but has impressed.

Sky Sports report that his international manager Marco Rossi believed he was going to join Chelsea.

Another club linked with Szalai are AC Milan, who have lost Simon Kjaer to a long-term injury. Fikayo Tomori is also facing a spell on the sidelines for the Rossoneri.

Attila Szalai would be a risk by Newcastle, but one potentially worth taking

At £16.7 million, Szalai could make for a decent signing for Newcastle.

But he doesn’t have Premier League experience, and a November feature from WhoScored didn’t really make him out to be particularly top-level.

The article suggested he should be winning more aerial duels for someone who stands at 6ft 4in tall. He also didn’t have the best pass accuracy (78.2%).

That said, Petros Konnafis – Apollon Limassol’s ex sporting director’ raved about Szalai last summer.

He said of him in an interview with First Time Finish: “He’s a 100% professional. He is one of the most intensive and focused football players I have ever met in my life. Attila was always doing extra training, he was always trying to learn and trying to work on his body.

“I think his best trait is that he is really fast and strong.”

Petros also predicted Szalai would one day become a Premier League player.
