Report: Newcastle have already started work on signing ‘world-class’ attacker Paulo Dybala

Newcastle have already made moves to sign Argentinian striker Paulo Dybala from AS Roma.

Dybala signed for Roma last summer on a free transfer, signing a contract which included a £17.7m release clause if the player was to stay in Italy, but only £10.6m if a club from abroad were to come in, which Newcastle reportedly already have according to Calciomercato.

The Italian outlet claims that Newcastle have already shown the first signs of interest in signing the striker in the next transfer window, however, Dybala may opt to stay at Roma depending on circumstances.

We are shopping in the posh aisles now

Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of Dybala with Gazzetta reporting in January last year that Manchester City were set to swoop if Dybala was to leave Juventus – a move which never materialised, but to think that Newcastle are now shopping in the same market as the likes of Pep Guardiola is a sure sign of progress.

At under £11m, bringing in Dybala, who has eight goals in 16 appearances for Roma this season, would be a masterstroke by Eddie Howe who has already shown he has an eye for a bargain, picking up Kieran Trippier for £12m and Bruno Guimaraes for less than we paid for Joelinton.

Whether Dybala would leave Roma for Newcastle is a different question all together with the 29-year-old saying: “The clause is a matter between my attorneys and the club, but I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season. And if I don’t know what’s going to happen with me, let alone the coach, you have to ask him.

“I’d like to be coached by him [Jose Mourinho] because he’s one of the best and I’d like to win with him, but for now I’m only thinking about the match against Salzburg. I hope Roma play in the Champions League next season.”

Champions League qualification could be the key

So that looks like he has his heart set on playing Champions League football next season, wherever he may be, which means Newcastle need to keep up their assault on the top four to ensure we qualify for Europe’s elite competition in order to tempt Dybala away from Mourinho and Roma.

His Champions League experience with Juventus would be an invaluable asset to Newcastle were they to qualify, especially given that we are light on players who have played at that level.
