According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are vying with Leeds for the signature of Arsenal’s Calum Chambers, following Mikel Arteta’s U-turn on the future of Rob Holding – who was another target of ours as Sky Sports reported.

The Toon Army were in talks with the Gunners over a move for Holding, but following impressive displays in the Community Shield and also against Fulham, Arteta has told the ex-Bolton man that he’s going nowhere.

As a result, it seems we’re targeting Chambers instead.

The three-cap England international cost Arsenal £16 million when they signed him from Southampton in 2014.

At 25 years of age, Chambers has made over 100 appearances for the north Londoners, and is capable of playing at centre-back, right-back or defensive-midfield according to Transfermarkt.

The ex-Fulham man once jokingly compared himself to none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, following a superbly taken, outside-of-the-boot effort against Burnley in the FA Cup back in 2016.

Alex Iwobi told Arsenal’s official website (via Goal): ‘Oh my gosh, he’s still talking about it now. In the showers, everyone was talking about it, he was like ‘yeah, Canaldo is what they call me now’.’

His versatility would be very useful for Steve Bruce.

His ability to play at centre-back will help provide cover there, while his nous in the right-back position could motivate Javier Manquillo and also ensure DeAndre Yedlin’s potential exit doesn’t leave us short.

TEAMtalk say we will have to compete with Leeds, as well as West Ham and Fulham for his signature.

However, if we get a deal done, it would be a fantastic signing given his pedigree.
