Newcastle United have been heavily linked with signing James Tarkowski in January.

The England defender’s Burnley contract expires next summer, and reports state that Tarkowski won’t be extending his stay at Turf Moor.

That means January is the last time for Burnley to cash in on the 29-year-old. He was previously valued at £50million, but there’s no way the Clarets will get that much now.

Shortly after the takeover went through, Newcastle were linked with a move for Tarkowski.

The Telegraph reported that he could be one of the Magpies’ first signings in January. However, West Ham have also been tentatively linked.

Will Tarkowski join Newcastle in January?

According to the Northern Echo, Toon officials are ‘reasonably confident’ about signing Tarkowski when the transfer window opens.

That’s fantastic news for Newcastle fans, who were very excited when the Tarkowski rumours emerged last month.

The Magpies desperately need reinforcements at the back, which was evident once again on Saturday. Despite renewed attacking intent, the usual problems in defence remained.

Tarkowski would certainly be an improvement on what we currently have. He’s a no nonsense defender with Premier League and international experience. He’s the kind of player we need in January.

The fact Newcastle officials are reportedly confident is encouraging, and suggests West Ham aren’t going to pose a threat.
