According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United’s first signing in January could be James Tarkowksi.
The Burnley defender is out of contract next summer, and will reportedly be allowed to leave when the transfer window opens. That’s best for both parties, as it means Burnley don’t lose one of their star players for nothing.
The Telegraph add that the 28-year-old is keen on a move to St James’ Park.
Since the takeover went through last week, Newcastle have been linked with a ridiculous amount of players. Some would be sensible additions, some are pure fantasy right now.
But out of all the players linked, Tarkowski might be the most sensible.
Newcastle need someone like James Tarkowski
While there’s a lot of excitement among Toon fans right now, things are still poor on the pitch. Newcastle are yet to win a game, leaving them in 19th in the Premier League.
Steve Bruce’s side have been shocking defensively, leaking chances at will. That will infuriate the manager, who was desperate to bring in a centre-back during the summer. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
But it will all change in January. New owners will bring new investment, allowing Newcastle to get the players they need. Sadly for Bruce, it seems all but certain that he’ll be gone by then.
Newcastle need a centre-back. They need someone who can come in straightaway and have an impact. Tarkowski can do that.
The England international is a top Premier League defender and even has two caps for his country. His no-nonsense approach is exactly what we need.
He could certainly thrive alongside Jamaal Lascelles just like he does at Burnley next to Ben Mee.
Tarkowski has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor for a long time, but has always been priced out of a departure. However, his contract situation makes him a very attainable target for Newcastle in January.
He’s realistic, sensible and will improve the squad straight away.
