Newcastle United came closer than the likes of Paris Saint-Germain to signing Portugal’s World Cup hero Goncalo Ramos last summer.
That’s according to 90min, who claim that whilst a myriad of clubs from across Europe were interested in acquiring the 21-year-old, the Magpies were the side closest to securing his signature.
It is believed the Toon initially held talks with Benfica over a potential move, before deciding to pursue Alexander Isak.
Both Manchester United and Nottingham Forest were keen on the forward, but they were put off by the player’s price-tag.
Furthermore, PSG were also admirers of the Portugal international, however, they ended up signing Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims – who was also linked with a move to Tyneside.
Newcastle came close to signing Ramos
Although the youngster has been excelling over the course of the past year, the majority of football fans are only now coming to learn of Ramos.
Yesterday, Portugal coach Fernando Santos dropped Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for their last-16 clash against Switzerland. Taking his place in the starting XI was the 21-year-old, who had only made three appearances for his country prior to this game.
Thrusting himself into the limelight, Ramos scored a memorable hat-trick in a 6-1 victory. Consequently, he became the youngest player to do so in a World Cup knockout match since Pele.
In Liga Portugal this season, the attacker has incredibly bagged nine goals and three assists in 11 appearances, having also totalled five goals and three assists in ten Champions League games (including qualifiers).
With such incredible talent, Newcastle may be wishing they secured the reported £35m transfer over the summer. However, they have an equally talented Isak to look forward to flourishing.
