Matt Targett explains why Alexander Isak will benefit from Saudi Arabia trip

Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United squad are currently in Saudi Arabia, and Matt Targett believes Alexander Isak will really benefit from the trip.

The Magpies arrived in Riyadh on Sunday, and are now being put through their paces by Howe as they prepare for domestic football to return.

It is the second time in 2022 that Newcastle have been to Saudi Arabia, having experienced a similar trip to Jeddah at the start of the year.

This one is slightly different, with various key players missing due to the World Cup.

But Howe still has a strong squad with him, including various youngsters and some first-teamers who are recovering from injury.

That includes Isak, who hasn’t played for Newcastle since September 17th. He has only made three appearances for his new club, having suffered with a thigh problem.

But the 23-year-old is nearing a return, and is enjoying his first trip away with the Magpies. And Targett believes it will be very beneficial for the Sweden international.

Matt Targett’s message for Alexander Isak

The left-back has been speaking to Newcastle’s official website, and explained why the training camp in Saudi Arabia will be good for Isak.

“The group here’s fantastic, so trips like this help everyone,” Targett said.

“We’ve got a few young players coming up, so it’s nice to get to know them and see what they can do, and then obviously for the new players like (Alexander) Isak, that helps.

“I think the trip benefitted me a lot when we went to Dubai when I first joined. It’s a real chance to get to know everyone that much better.”

Important trip for Isak

The most important thing for Isak right now is to get fully fit. He must be desperate to play for Newcastle again, having scored two goals in his first three appearances.

Injury has hindered his start to life on Tyneside, but now the end is in sight. It is hoped that he will be able to play when the Premier League returns on Boxing Day.

But as well as building up his fitness, it is also important for Isak to build up relationships with his new teammates. That is why these trips are important for Newcastle, and they appear to have made a real difference.

Targett has spoke about how a similar trip helped him at the start of the year, and he hopes this journey to Saudi Arabia can have the same effect on Isak.
