Newcastle United have been linked with signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton, with a new report from the Athletic claiming that Eddie Howe is a fan of the midfielder.

The Magpies are currently in the market for a Jonjo Shelvey replacement. The 30-year-old is currently out with an injury, having picked up a groin problem ahead of the Boxing Day victory over Leicester.

That forced Dan Ashworth to make a centre-midfielder his priority signing in January, and the need has intensified following Bruno Guimaraes’ injury. The Brazilian is not set to be out for too long, but his ankle knock serves as a fresh reminder of Howe’s limited options in the middle of the park.

But while that position is Newcastle’s priority, we are yet to see a new face arrive at St James’ Park.

21-year-old Ecuadorian Caicedo is reportedly on the Magpies’ list of targets, and a report from the Athletic has shed more light on why he is being considered as a possible signing.

Why Eddie Howe wants Moises Caicedo at Newcastle

According to the Athletic, both Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe are fans of the Brighton youngster. It was the former who brought Caicedo to the Premier League when he worked for the Seagulls.

The report adds that Howe thinks Caicedo is ideal for his Newcastle team, believing he would suit the ‘number six’ role and fit in seamlessly with the high-intensity style he has brought to St James’ Park.

He also has the Premier League experience that Howe is craving.

At 21-years-old, Caicedo is certainly the right age for Newcastle. The Magpies are always on the lookout for young players who can go on to achieve their potential on Tyneside, whilst helping the club achieve its goals as they climb the footballing ladder.

The only issue with Caicedo is his price. The Athletic add that he could cost at least £60million, which is the same fee that has been reported elsewhere throughout January.

A deal for the midfielder won’t come cheap, but he is perhaps someone worth splashing out on. It would not be a panic buy – he will surely be looked at again in the summer if he does not arrive this month.

It could all come down to whether or not Newcastle are willing to invest a huge amount of money during the January transfer window. If that is the case then Caicedo could be the perfect addition for Howe.
