Newcastle transfer news: Hakim Ziyech is NUFC's Anthony Gordon alternative

Newcastle United are reportedly becoming more confident that they are going to sign Anthony Gordon this month, but have a backup option lined up in case a deal with Everton collapses.

That is according to the Telegraph, who state that the Magpies are hoping to finalise a deal for the 21-year-old in the next few days.

Time is running out for Newcastle to improve their squad, with the January transfer window set to close next Tuesday.

Eddie Howe is desperate for attacking reinforcements, having allowed Chris Wood to join Nottingham Forest on loan. That decision has led to a fresh move for Gordon, who was a target during the summer.

A deal could not be reached then, but a move could happen now. The Telegraph add that Gordon is keen to move to St James’ Park, while it was recently claimed by the Chronicle that he has been impressed by the job that Eddie Howe has been doing.

The pair could soon be about to work together on Tyneside, but Newcastle do have other options if Dan Ashworth is unable to bring the Scouser to the North East.

Newcastle could move for Hakim Ziyech if Anthony Gordon bid fails

The Telegraph add that Newcastle are continuing to look at other options in case they are unable to sign Gordon.

One of those is Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, who is reportedly considered to be a cheaper alternative. A loan move for the Morocco international is also a possibility, with the Telegraph stating that is something that suits some of the decision makers at St James’ Park.

While Ziyech is a player with a bigger reputation, I would personally rather see Gordon arrive this month. That is largely down to his age and the untapped potential that he possesses.

While Gordon turns 22 next month, Ziyech hits 30 in March. A move for the former Ajax man would not be a long-term solution, whereas Gordon could go on to be a Newcastle player for the next 10 years.

There is no doubting Ziyech’s ability. While he has rarely proved it in the Premier League, he is still an exceptional footballer who possesses the craft to break down stubborn defences.

That quality would be welcome at St James’ Park, but so would Gordon’s direct running.

It looks like Newcastle are edging closer to signing the Everton youngster, but there is a backup plan just in case.
