Newcastle transfer news: Botman and Carlos wanted Toon move because of Trippier

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign both Sven Botman and Diego Carlos in January.

The pair were the Magpies’ main defensive targets, but sadly neither arrived at St James’ Park. They were both priced out of a move to the Premier League, despite being keen on joining.

It was disappointing for Newcastle, who eventually signed a centre-back on deadline day. Dan Burn joined from Brighton, and enjoyed a fantastic debut against Aston Villa last time out.

The Botman and Carlos pursuits summed up how difficult the January transfer window was for Newcastle. Clubs knew how desperate we were, and how much money we had to spend. Combine that with the difficulty of transfer dealings midway through the season and it was a recipe for disaster.

In the end, Newcastle made five new signings. It was a great window, but it could’ve been even better.

Kieran Trippier almost inspired more Newcastle signings last month

The first player to arrive was Kieran Trippier, and he has really set the tone for the new Newcastle United. And he almost influenced even more arrivals at St James’ Park.

According to the Athletic, part of the reason Botman and Carlos were initially keen on joining Newcastle last month was because Trippier had already made the move.

The England right-back was a statement signing, and proved big names would be willing to join the Magpies despite the threat of relegation.

The fact Botman and Carlos were willing to give up Champions League football and a La Liga title chase respectively shows the immense pulling power Newcastle suddenly have. And that will only increase in the summer if we achieve Premier League survival.

Trippier’s impact has been astonishing. He’s raised standards on and off the pitch, and he almost helped the club land two top class centre-backs.
