A European club threatened by relegation are believed to have made an inquiry about one Newcastle United player this month.

Newcastle’s January window has largely been dominated by rumours linking players away from the club rather than new signings, though nothing has come to fruition.

A new report from Chronicle Live now claims that Lyon made an inquiry for Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles this month.

Newcastle captain wanted by more than one European club

In the last couple of weeks it’s been clear that Lascelles was wanted by Turkish giants Besiktas but the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement on a few for the 29-year-old.

That move could still happen with the Turkish transfer window not closing until next week so Besiktas still have time to make the defender reconsider his options.

However, a new club has entered the conversation as it was revealed that Lyon were also keen on signing Lascelles who has dropped back to the bench after filling in for the injured Sven Botman in the November and December.

The player himself is believed to be happy at Newcastle and Eddie Howe is very keen to keep him at the club, though he does have just six months left on his current contract and could leave on a free in the summer.

Newcastle don’t want to lose anyone this January

If they had received a decent fee for the defender a week ago the club may have considered selling him, but now there just wouldn’t be enough time for Newcastle to find a suitable replacement.

They may look to extend the 29-year-old’s contract as he proved in the last few months that he’s still got the quality to compete in the Premier League, especially after a strong performance against PSG.

However, it’s a very realistic possibility that the club will be looking to find a new long-term replacement for the experienced defender to ideally develop into a first-team player and ultimately take over from Fabian Schar.
