Newcastle United want to sign Johan Bakayoko in January, but that could be easier said than done.

Newcastle want to sign young players from overseas rather than proven Premier League players, as PSR continues to influence the Magpies’ transfer decisions.

Rather than target Bryan Mbeumo or Antoine Semenyo, Newcastle are interested in Johan Bakayoko.

The PSV Eindhoven winger is on the Magpies’ radar, with Geordie Boot Boys told that the Newcastle scouting team really like Bakayoko.

The 21-year-old ticks a lot of boxes, while Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe are in agreement about adding him to the current Newcastle United squad – ideally as soon as January.

Newcastle want to sign a right winger in January, which is why Bakayoko is being targeted. However, it could be very difficult to agree a deal with PSV.

That is according to Give Me Sport, who claim that PSV do not have much of an appetite to sell Bakayoko during the January transfer window.

Give Me Sport add that PSV may even raise Bakayoko’s asking price, in an attempt to deter Newcastle United or any other suitor.

What Newcastle’s options are amid PSV’s Bakayoko stance

With PSV not looking to sell one of their star players midway through the season, Newcastle United have three options.

Newcastle’s first option is to target someone else in January. That will depend on whether Mitchell can identify a viable alternative, with Newcastle also scouting Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco.

Another option is Newcastle delay their pursuit of a right-winger and wait until the summer when a deal for Bakayoko is more likely. That will allow Mitchell to get better value for money, but it could leave Eddie Howe short of attacking options for the second half of the season.

The Magpies’ final option is to pay over the odds and sign Bakayoko in January. Every player has a price – it is just a bit higher in January. While Newcastle may have to pay more than they want, it could help the club in the long-run. If signing Bakayoko is the difference between qualifying for Europe and missing out, it feels like a no brainer to bring him in.

However, there will be a reluctance to pay the overinflated fee that PSV could command. In truth, Newcastle might not even be able to do that, as PSR continues to limit the club’s capacity to spend.
