‘Probably’… £19m striker set to leave at the end of the season after Newcastle interest

Journalist Luke Edwards has shared his view on the future of one Newcastle United target who was in high demand this month.

Though it’s well known that Newcastle’s budget has been very limited this month, that hasn’t stopped them from showing interest in some very impressive players.

One of those names Newcastle have admired is Dominic Solanke and Edwards has now claimed on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast that he thinks the striker will now leave in the summer instead of January.

Newcastle could still make a move for impressive striker

When Newcastle first registered their interest in the Bournemouth striker it was pretty clear that they wouldn’t be able to afford whatever price the Cherries would be demanding for their in form man.

With 12 goals in 20 Premier League appearances this season there’s been a lot of attention on the £19m signing with Tottenham also potentially looking to bring him in as a new attacking option.

However, Edwards has claimed that there will be no January move for the 26-year-old but that both Newcastle and Tottenham could reignite their interest in him in the summer.

On the podcast, Edwards said: “He was actually signed by Eddie Howe when Howe was manager of Bournemouth. Newcastle were linked with him earlier in the window.

“I just think we’re looking at a player who might soon outgrow Bournemouth.

“As we’ve seen with this window there’s been a lot of talk and not a lot of deals and this is another one of those, so no he’s not going to leave this window.

“I think he’ll probably leave in the summer, I think he will outgrow Bournemouth, the campaign he’s had.”

Newcastle are in need of a new attacker

It may be too late to make any additions now in January but Newcastle will almost definitely be in the market for a new striker in the summer, especially if Callum Wilson is sold.

It’s a huge risk to rely on Wilson and Alexander Isak to stay fit for a full season and it’s leaving Newcastle very short in attack with Anthony Gordon having to fill in in a more central role.

Ideally, Newcastle would be bringing in another attacker in the summer, though whether or not that is Solanke depends on what Bournemouth are demanding and how keen the striker himself is on the move.
