It looks like Brighton are no longer interested in Newcastle United target Scott McTominay which removes one obstacle for Eddie Howe.

As divisive as Newcastle‘s interest in Scott McTominay is, this could be good news or bad news depending on which side of the fence you find yourself.

According to Alex Crook of TalkSPORT, Brighton are out of the running for Scott McTominay and, another potential Newcastle target, Alex Scott from Bristol City. Taking to Twitter to deliver the news, Crook said: “As of tonight still no official bid from #CFC for Moises Caicedo. #BHAFC also not in the running for Alex Scott at current valuation nor Scott McTominay. Interest remains in Levi Colwill as well as Calvin Bassey and Mohammed Kudus, though financially that one does not look easy.”

Newcastle’s path to McTominay is a bit clearer now

The Manchester United midfielder has been on Newcastle’s radar for a while and many fans are unconvinced that the Scotland international adds anything to the squad we don’t already have.

Sean Longstaff is the player often used as the basis for comparison and that doesn’t bode well for McTominay as Longstaff has him beat on nearly every metric according to FBref.

However, it’s always worth bearing in mind just how good Eddie Howe is as getting the best out of players and if he sees something in McTominay then who are we to argue?

Eddie Howe could get the best out of McTominay

It’s the £40million valuation that I have the biggest issue with. I’m sure there is a good player in McTominay, we saw flashes of it last season when he went on a goalscoring run for club and country, but based on the comparisons, if McTominay is worth £40million then Sean Longstaff must be worth £50m+.

If I can try and add some positivity to this, McTominay is only 26 so has plenty of years left in him and can still improve, he also has bags of experience playing at the top level with Manchester United and he would add decent depth to the squad even if he’s not the signing we all want.

It’s about trusting the process. If Howe has chased him for this long and is still interested then he clearly sees something in the lad. He could come and surprise us all.
