If Newcastle United still want to sign Scott McTominay, now might be their chance.

The Scotland international was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle heading into the summer, with the Magpies planning a fresh approach for the Manchester United midfielder.

He wanted to sign for Eddie Howe’s side in January, but was denied that opportunity by the Red Devils. But Newcastle were not put off, and had planned to make a fresh move for the 26-year-old.

However, talk of him heading to St James’ Park has been very quiet since the arrival of Sandro Tonali on Tyneside. And that is despite the fact Howe is keen to add another midfielder to his squad.

Whether or not that honour will go to McTominay remains to be seen, but there might now be an opportunity for Newcastle to make a move.

Man United now really need to sell Scott McTominay

That is because a new report from the Independent states that Man United need to sell McTominay and one more player if they are to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina.

Erik ten Hag is keen to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford this summer. He was one of the stars of 2022 World Cup, shining for Morocco who came fourth out in Qatar.

Amrabat was incredible throughout the tournament, and it now looks like he could earn himself a move move to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

However, financial reasons mean Man United need to sell before they buy – see, it isn’t just us!

That could result in McTominay departing, giving Newcastle the chance to sign a player they have tracked throughout Howe’s tenure on Tyneside.

However, it sounds like West Ham are actually the frontrunners. The report adds that they will step up their interest once Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal is official. The Hammers have been left frustrated by the delay, as it has impacted their own transfer business.

Harvey Barnes is one player they wanted, but now it looks like he is going to sign for Newcastle. McTominay is another player who both clubs have targeted, and his future could be decided soon if Man United are serious about replacing him with Amrabat.
