Newcastle United’s search for a striker continues, but they have been given a great chance to replace Callum Wilson with a striker expected to leave his Premier League club on a free transfer.
The first week of the summer transfer window is nearing its conclusion, and fans are still waiting for that first signing for the starting XI to come through the door.
Newcastle United need to make several improvements to the starting XI this summer after confirming their qualification for the Champions League on the final day of the season. Bruno Guimaraes made it clear he expects Newcastle to become stronger this summer, and manager Eddie Howe confirmed that the transfer window will be a big one.
Fans are desperate for that first quality signing to be announced after so long since the Magpies made an improvement to their starting XI. It is fast approaching 700 days since Lewis Hall joined on loan from Chelsea in 2023, so the first player to come through the door will surely be welcomed with open arms.
Newcastle are looking to sign a striker to partner Alexander Isak next season, and they look to have found their man in Joao Pedro. However, the Magpies’ recruitment team could be swayed after learning that a striker they tried to sign in 2024 is now likely to leave his club this summer.

Newcastle United told Dominic Calvert-Lewin is likely to leave Everton for free
It has been a rough couple of years for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has struggled to find his form since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.
The 28-year-old is out of contract this summer and could leave the Merseyside club nine years after signing. With Newcastle looking for a striker and their history with the player, they will be well aware of his situation. Newcastle were linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin in January, where his reported wage demands were around £100,000-a-week.
It was reported that Everton were still in talks with Calvert-Lewin over a new deal, but with less than 10 days left before his contract expires, there has been no update on whether he will sign.
However, according to The Athletic, sources from inside the club have stated that the most likely outcome for Calvert-Lewin is for him to leave Everton. Talks have barely made any progress in the last two weeks, but the report states that he has interest from England’s top two leagues and in the MLS.
Should he join Newcastle, it is believed that Calvert-Lewin will seek a multi-year deal with lucrative terms.

An update on Callum Wilson’s future at Newcastle United
Like Calvert-Lewin, striker Callum Wilson has not had the best of seasons, failing to score in any of his Premier League appearances.
In a revealing interview earlier in 2025, Wilson admitted he was frustrated with Alexander Isak’s game time compared to his, but realised it was hard to pick him given how well the Swede has been playing.

| Appearances | 18 |
| Minutes | 357 |

Wilson’s contract expires at the end of the month, but there is still no update on whether he will remain at the club. The 33-year-old has been offered a new deal with more incentives based on keeping fit and playing games.
As it stands, Wilson will leave Newcastle at the end of his contract and move on to another club in England. Coincidentally, Everton are interested in Wilson, so everything could work out well for both parties.
