Paul Dummett has just been offered to a Premier League club after Newcastle United exit

Paul Dummett is still without a club after being released by Newcastle United.

The 32-year-old left Newcastle United at the end of last season, with Toon officials opting against giving Paul Dummett a contract extension.

He may have stayed on Tyneside had the Magpies qualified for Europe, but Newcastle missing out meant there was no way they could justify keeping Dummett.

The defender is still on the lookout for a new club, having spent the entire summer as a free agent after seeing his Newcastle United career come to an end.

Wolves suffer major injury blow

Dummett has been linked with clubs in the Championship, and a move to the second tier of English football has felt likely.

However, the Geordie defender might now have a route back to the Premier League.

That is because Wolverhampton Wanderers are short of centre-backs. Yerson Mosquera was stretchered off during Wolves’ defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, and it has been announced that the 23-year-old is unlikely to play again this season.

Paul Dummett offered to Wolves

That could force Wolves to dip into the free agent market, as they weigh up whether or not to bring in additional defensive cover in the wake of Mosquera’s injury.

And Geordie Boot Boys have been told by HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey that Wolves have been offered the chance to sign Dummett.

“Paul Dummett’s name has come up,” he said.

“Wolves have been hit by the Mosquera injury, which leaves them short at the back. They are not in a good position.

“James Tomkins and Dummett have both been offered to Wolves, but I think they will try and get to January without signing anyone.

“The last we saw of Dummett was Sheffield United being linked, while Portsmouth were also keen earlier in the summer.”

How Matt Ritchie is getting on at Portsmouth

Dummett was not the only long-serving player to leave Newcastle United this summer.

But while Dummett is still without a club, Matt Ritchie is back at Portsmouth after his time on Tyneside came to an end.

The 35-year-old has made six appearances since his return to Pompey, with his only start coming in a 3-1 defeat to Sunderland.

Ritchie is yet to win a game since re-signing for Portsmouth, with John Mousinho’s side currently second-bottom of the Championship.
