Newcastle United’s move for Nick Woltemade may not grant Alexander Isak his wish right away.
Newcastle are set to sign Woltemade for a club-record fee from Stuttgart, bringing an end to their pursuit of a new striker.
The club have tried to sign a replacement for Callum Wilson all summer but had failed at every turn before agreeing a huge deal to sign the aforementioned German international.
Newcastle’s transfer record is set to fall but that does not necessarily mean the man who currently holds the record as the most expensive signing in club history will be allowed to leave all of a sudden.
Indeed, Luke Edwards offered an update on Thursday.

Nothing has changed for Alexander Isak and Liverpool
Taking to social media platform X, Edwards revealed that his sources suggested Woltemade was seen as Wilson’s replacement.
Right now, nothing has changed for Isak. Newcastle may still need to find another striker before they consider granting the Sweden international the chance to complete the move he so desperately desires.
The Daily Telegraph journalist, however, does add that Liverpool will likely return with a new bid for Isak and a decision will be made by Newcastle when that happens.
How Nick Woltemade compares to Alexander Isak
Newcastle were always going to struggle to replace a player of Isak’s quality.
Still, the point is that Isak wasn’t the player he is today when Newcastle bought him. Eddie Howe and the Newcastle coaching staff turned him into one of the world’s best strikers.
| 2024/25 league statistics | Nick Woltemade | Alexander Isak |
| Games | 28 | 34 |
| Goals | 12 | 23 |
| Assists | 2 | 6 |
| Shots/90 | 1.8 | 2.9 |
| Dribbles/90 | 1.1 | 1.2 |
| Key passes/90 | 1.3 | 1.2 |
| Aerial duels/90 | 1.8 | 0.8 |
It would be tough for any striker in world football to match Isak, but it’s perhaps worth looking at how the two compared last season.
Woltemade certainly looks a talent given the statistics above, albeit the Premier League is generally considered a much tougher division in which to play than the Bundesliga.
Still, the hope will be that Howe can work his magic again.
