‘Next summer’: Newcastle may try to sign 27-year-old ‘phenom’ to play alongside Bruno – journalist

Newcastle United may look to sign RC Lens midfielder Seko Fofana if the Ligue 1 club fail to qualify for the Champions League, according to journalist Robin Bairner on GiveMeSport.

After an impressive few seasons in France, the 27-year-old has started to build transfer interest across Europe.

According to French news outlet L’Equipe, alongside the Magpies, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing the Ivory Coast international.

Failing to qualify for Europe last season with a seventh-place domestic finish, Bairner believes the Lens captain could look to move elsewhere if they fail to qualify for the Champions League again this year.

“If Lens make the Champions League this year, for example, you could see a player like Seko Fofana staying there, simply because of this bond that they’ve got,” said Bairner.

“If they don’t make the top three, then again, potentially next summer, this could be a move that happens.

“Fofana is a player who has all the attributes to play in England, and Newcastle would surely be interested.

“But I imagine he is a player that most teams in England would be interested in, given what he’s produced. But again, it’s a case of whether Lens can keep up with his ambitions.”

Newcastle could move for Fofana

When looking at Fofana’s underlying stats, it is easy to see why the Magpies want to land the 27-year-old at St James’ Park next summer.

Compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the midfielder ranks in the top two percent for shots total and progressive passes received, and also in the top five percent for dribbles completed and touches in the attacking penalty area.

Consequently, he has earned statistical comparisons to Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, and also to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Hailed by journalist Zach Lowy as a ‘phenom’, Fofana would sure be a brilliant signing for Newcastle.

Bairner has previously claimed the Ivorian would be a brilliant player to partner Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the park, and with that Ligue 1 connection, this could be a really exciting duo playing in the Toon midfield.
