Newcastle’s chances of signing Joe Gomez from Liverpool rated after Marc Guehi deal collapses

Had things gone differently this summer, Joe Gomez would already be a Newcastle United player right now.

The Magpies nearly signed Joe Gomez back in June, as they almost allowed Anthony Gordon to join Liverpool in an attempt to solve their PSR nightmare.

Newcastle offered Gordon to Liverpool, and there was almost a deal in place that would see Gomez move the other way.

Joe Gomez was interested in signing for Newcastle, and medicals were booked for both players in Germany as they represented England at Euro 2024.

Luckily for Toon fans, the deal collapsed, as Newcastle United found another way to comply with PSR. Gordon is still at St James’ Park, despite suggestions his head was turned by the prospect of moving to Liverpool.

Joe Gomez is available after Marc Guehi deal collapses

Instead of Gomez, Newcastle have been targeting a deal for Marc Guehi. He has been Eddie Howe’s top centre-back target, but it now looks like a deal is extremely unlikely.

Newcastle have pulled out of a deal for Guehi, with Paul Mitchell unable to agree a fee with Crystal Palace for the 24-year-old. Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Crystal Palace want £75million for Guehi, with Newcastle’s most recent offer worth £70million.

That has resulted in the deal being off, leaving Toon officials scrambling to sign a centre-back.

Newcastle are open for business on deadline day, but are not going to panic buy. They are not going to sign players who they do not see as top targets, which could be bad news for those who want to see Joe Gomez move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle unlikely to target Joe Gomez on transfer deadline day

According to the Athletic, Gomez could leave Liverpool on transfer deadline day, with the 27-year-old very much out of favour under Arne Slot.

But while the defender could make a late move away from Anfield, the Athletic add that Newcastle are unlikely to show any interest in Gomez.

That does not come as a major surprise, and sums up Newcastle’s desire not to panic despite the need for incomings.

While Gomez is a good defender, he is not a major improvement on what Eddie Howe already has. His versatility does make him appealing, but he would only be a stopgap.

That is not what Newcastle are looking for, which is why Gomez will have to hope another club shows an interest in him before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

More interest in Anthony Gordon

Newcastle’s previous interest in Gomez stemmed from Gordon almost moving to Liverpool.

That deal did not materialise, but now there is more interest in Newcastle United’s number 10.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing Gordon from Newcastle.

However, they add that the winger is on track to remain at St James’ Park, with both club and player in discussions over a contract extension.
