Newcastle will hope they’ve got another Yankuba Minteh situation after sending ‘very talented’ player out on loan

Newcastle United had great success when they sent Yankuba Minteh to the Eredivisie last season.

The Gambian winger enjoyed an incredibly successful loan spell at Feyenoord, so much so that it ended up helping Newcastle United get out of their PSR nightmare.

Following Yankuba Minteh’s performances in the Netherlands, the Magpies sold him to Brighton And Hove Albion for £33million.

Eddie Howe was gutted to see Minteh go, but a departure was necessary given Newcastle’s PSR situation. In truth, it was a good job he did so well at Feyenoord, otherwise Newcastle never would have got the kind of money they did for him.

Jamie Carragher has already suggested that Newcastle will regret selling Minteh, even if his departure was enforced.

Newcastle send another player to the Eredivisie

Minteh’s loan spell in the Eredivisie was extremely successful, and now Newcastle are hoping to repeat the trick with Miodrag Pivas.

After joining the Magpies this summer, the Serbian defender has signed for Willem II on loan for the 2024/25 season.

The 19-year-old has a lot of potential, and Willem II’s technical director Tom Caluwé has spoke to their official website about the arrival of Pivas from Newcastle.

“We want to create a balance between experience and young talent,” he said.

“We have good contacts in England and Miodrag came into the picture at our scouting.

“He is a very talented defender who wants to gain experience at the highest level. We can help him with that and it gives our selection a quality boost across the board.”

Newcastle will hope that Miodrag Pivas emulates Yankuba Minteh rather than Garang Kuol

If Pivas can do as well in the Eredivisie as Minteh then Newcastle United will be delighted.

However, if his loan spell goes the same way as Garang Kuol‘s then there will be a real sense of fear.

While Minteh went to Feyenoord last season, Kuol was at Volendam. After his disappointing stint at Hearts, the hope was that the young Aussie would finally start to prove himself.

However, that did not prove to be the case. Instead, Kuol had a miserable time at Volendam for reasons outside of his control. Various changes behind the scenes resulted in a change of style on the pitch, which ultimately led to Kuol barely playing.

It was a wasted year for the forward, and Kuol has not been seen since Newcastle’s pre-season trip to Germany after suffering an injury.

Toon officials will have everything crossed that Pivas’ move to the Netherlands is more Minteh, less Kuol.
