Newcastle want to sign ‘talented’ 26-year-old and give him same wages as Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United’s highest earner right now is Bruno Guimaraes, but he could soon be joined by James Maddison at the top if the Magpies get their wish.

Eddie Howe is hoping it is a case of third time lucky, as Newcastle try to sign Maddison for the third transfer window in a row.

A move away from Leicester City appears to be inevitable following the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship, and Newcastle are planning to make a move for the 26-year-old.

It has been claimed that Maddison is tempted by a possible switch to Tyneside, but he could also have the option of joining Tottenham. They continue to be linked with the England international, with new boss Ange Postecoglu keen to sign him.

Newcastle will be hoping to beat Tottenham in the race to sign Maddison, and are reportedly prepared to make him their joint-highest earner.

According to 90min, Newcastle are prepared to make Maddison their joint-highest earner alongside star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

In contrast, 90min state that Spurs are willing to offer wages comparable to what Harry Kane earns. He earns around £200,000-a-week at Tottenham.

That is more than Newcastle’s highest earner Bruno, who takes home £120,000-a-week. However, he is due to receive a pay rise with talks continuing over a new contract at St James’ Park. That would see him become the club’s best paid player ever.

It is unclear whether 90min’s report means Maddison would earn £120,000-a-week at Newcastle, or the same amount that Bruno is going to receive when he signs his new contract. Given the Magpies’ unwillingness to break their wage structure, it will likely be the former.

While becoming the club’s best paid player sounds tempting, it looks like Maddison would be able to earn more money at Tottenham. However, he would not get Champions League football there like he would at Newcastle.

Pundit Ian Wright has tipped the ‘talented‘ midfielder to join Newcastle and thrive on Tyneside, but it remains to be seen whether Maddison fancies moving to the North East or London.
