Newcastle United have received a boost in their bid to sign James Maddison from Leicester City this summer.
The Magpies have failed to sign him during the previous two transfer windows, but are hoping it is a case of third time lucky during the summer of 2023.
Maddison is set to leave Leicester City following their relegation to the Championship, with his contract at the King Power Stadium set to expire next year. The Foxes are going to have to cash in, meaning Newcastle now have a genuine chance to bring the 26-year-old to Tyneside.
The midfielder is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur, but Eddie Howe’s side have the lure of Champions League football. Maddison has never played in Europe’s top competition, and he would not be guaranteed that opportunity if he were to join Spurs.
His Champions League dream would become a reality if he swapped Leicester for Newcastle, and it now sounds like the England international is open to the prospect of playing for Howe.

According to the Telegraph, sources close to Maddison believe that he is tempted to join Newcastle during the upcoming summer transfer window.
That is a huge boost to the Magpies’ hopes of signing the ‘exceptional‘ midfielder. The main issue was always going to be convincing him to make the move to Tyneside – especially if he has other options in front of him.
Of course, the lure of Champions League football is massively helpful. It is another reason why finishing in the top four was so important for the club.
With Maddison at least tempted by the prospect of signing for Newcastle, it now looks like the only potential roadblock is the fee. However, with Leicester resigned to losing their star man, it should not be too much of an issue for the Toon recruitment team.
It has been reported that Newcastle hope to land Maddison for less than £50million, which would surely prove to be good business given his immense ability.
