Left-back has been a problem position for Newcastle United this season, and that is something that Eddie Howe may address in the summer.
Dan Burn was outstanding during the 2022/23 campaign in that position, but has struggled to hit the same levels after sustaining a serious back injury. The 31-year-old has been exploited due to his lack of pace, leading to fans calling for him to be removed from the starting XI.
Elsewhere, Matt Targett has struggled with injury while Lewis Hall does not appear to have gained Eddie Howe’s trust following his arrival from Chelsea.
That could force Newcastle to dip into the transfer market this summer, and Football Transfers have now linked the Magpies with someone who is currently part of Arsenal’s Premier League title charge.
Newcastle interested in Oleksandr Zinchenko
According to Football Transfers, Newcastle United are interested in signing Oleksandr Zinchenko from Arsenal this summer.
They state that Bayern Munich are also keen on the Ukraine international, with the Gunners willing to sell the 27-year-old for £38.5million.
That kind of money would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever, while it would also hint at a change in tactics at St James’ Park.
Burn’s biggest asset is his height and ability in the air, while he often tucks inside to create a back three to allow Kieran Trippier to attack more on the opposite flank. But that would not be possible with Zinchenko in the side, with the former Man City man much shorter. However, his technical ability in possession makes up for his lack of height.

Newcastle wanted Zinchenko in late 2021
Zinchenko is not a new target for Newcastle. In fact, he was on the Magpies’ radar shortly after Howe became manager at St James’ Park.
He was linked with a loan move back then, but a deal did not materialise. Since then, Zinchenko has become a much better player, although his influence at Arsenal has waned this season.
In fact, he was even called ‘sluggish‘ by Michael Owen earlier this season after a Champions League defeat to Lens.
It is surprising to hear he could leave Arsenal just two years after his £30million arrival, but Mikel Arteta’s decision could suddenly hand Howe the opportunity to solve his left-back problem. However, it will be difficult to fend off interest from Bayern Munich – especially without the lure of Champions League football.
