Newcastle may well be busy between now and the end of the transfer window as the club looks to put together a squad capable of beating the drop.
The Athletic has run through some of the positions Newcastle are looking to bring a player in to strengthen.
Central defender, creative midfielder, another striker and left back are among them, and targets for those including Diego Carlos, Jesse Lingard, Hugo Ekitike and Mitchel Bakker mooted.

They also claim that a dynamic holding midfield player is on the list too, and that targets have been identified domestically and abroad.
It is not named who they are, but it is clear that Newcastle have options to bring in an anchorman who can cover the ground well.
Perhaps long-term target Hamza Choudhury would be among them, although he has been playing out of position at centre-half given the injury problems at Leicester right now.

There could be an awful lot of activity in the closing days of the window. Imagine if Newcastle do manage to strengthen in all five positions.
That would be seven signings in total, a huge overhaul in the first transfer window since the takeover. But there is plenty of work to do between now and then.
It remains to be seen who the key holding midfield target is and whether Newcastle can get the deal over the line.
