Newcastle United are interested in signing Club Brugge star Aleksandar Stankovic, but Inter Milan could have a big say.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and Newcastle United could be in the market for signings.

Eddie Howe was busy over the summer, but his Newcastle signings have been a real mixed bag.

Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw have impressed, but Yoane Wissa hasn’t made his debut yet, and Anthony Elanga has struggled.

Howe may feel that a January signing or two can help Newcastle kick on in the second half of the season, with another midfielder on the wish list.

Inter Milan involved in Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Stankovic chase

A new name in the mix is Club Brugge star Aleksandar Stankovic.

Tuttosport claim that Newcastle are very interested in signing Club Brugge star Aleksandar Stankovic.

Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on Stankovic, who is the son of former Inter Milan star Dejan Stankovic.

Inter sold Stankovic junior to Club Brugge over the summer, but inserted two buy-back clauses into the deal.

Inter can re-sign Stankovic for €23million (£20.3million) at the end of this season, or €25million (£22million) in 2027.

Stankovic leaving Club Brugge in January is considered unlikely, but Inter may look to activate their buy-back clause at the end of the campaign.

That may not be the end of Newcastle’s interest, though, as Inter could simply flip him for profit to Newcastle, Spurs or another interested team.

Inter would consider bringing Stankovic back to play a key role in their future, but the chance to cash in and take the money is appealing.

Stankovic has been impressive in the Pro League this season, and he has also shown potential in the Champions League.

Newcastle will continue to keep tabs on Stankovic’s situation, but Inter are lurking with their buy-back clause.

Another midfielder appears to be Newcastle United’s priority

Jacob Ramsey joined Newcastle over the summer, but speculation points towards another midfielder being the priority for Howe.

Newcastle allegedly fancy signing Atalanta’s Ederson, viewing him as a potential replacement for fellow Brazilian Joelinton.

Ederson is a proven midfielder in Serie A, whereas Stankovic is more of a hot prospect for the future.

That description also fits another target, with Newcastle keen on signing Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are also keen on Smit, though, meaning Newcastle face a fierce battle.

Most of the rumours around Newcastle are centred on midfielders right now, with Stankovic just the latest target to emerge.
