Newcastle United could make a late move for a Serie A striker as an alternative to Yoane Wissa before the transfer deadline.
Nick Woltemade’s club record deal was confirmed on Saturday morning, but it is clear that Eddie Howe wants at least one more player before the transfer window closes.
Newcastle United’s summer spending has reached over £200m following Woltemade’s arrival for £69m, and there could be some more cash splashed in the next 24 hours as the Magpies aim to sign a new striker.
It is common knowledge that Newcastle are very interested in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. The 28-year-old is desperate to leave the Bees for Newcastle, and recently released a statement on social media confirming his intentions.
However, reports suggest Brentford want Newcastle to pay £65m for Wissa, which they will surely be unwilling to do. Now, a new report has stated that the Magpies are now turning their attention elsewhere.

Newcastle United in talks over move for AS Roma’s Artem Dovbyk
With little hope of landing Wissa, Newcastle need to look elsewhere. In this case, Howe has opted to look much further afield into Europe.
Their search has now taken them to Serie A, a league they have already recruited from this season, when they signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan.
Now, according to the Sun, Newcastle have entered talks to sign Artem Dovbyk from AS Roma. The Ukrainian international only joined Roma last season, but the Magpies could now bring him in before the deadline.
The report states that Newcastle are in talks over a potential loan move with an option to buy for the striker, who their head coach Gian Piero Gasperini called ‘incredibly dedicated’ in August. Talks come after reports that Newcastle want to sign a second striker after Woltemade.
With Alexander Isak looking more likely to join Liverpool before the transfer window closes, it is clear that Newcastle need to bring in a new forward as they cannot rely on William Osula as a backup option.

Artem Dovbyk’s statistics compared to Yoane Wissa amid Newcastle United links
Dovbyk enjoyed a bright season at Roma, but his goal contributions halved following his impressive 2023/24 campaign with Girona.
A loan may be the best option for the 28-year-old for now, as there may not be enough time to get a permanent deal done. Dovbyk will need to travel from Italy to the UK, take his medical and sign all the paperwork, and that does not take into account all the negotiations between the two clubs which need to take place.
| 2024/25 statistics | Artem Dovbyk | Yoane Wissa |
| Appearances | 32 | 35 |
| Minutes | 2,432 | 2,929 |
| Goals | 12 | 19 |
| Assists | 3 | 5 |
It is fair to say negotiations with Roma will surely be much easier than the talks Newcastle have had with Brentford. The Magpies have already had two bids rejected for the DR Congo international and are now being quoted ridiculous prices.
Newcastle need to get a striker over the line, but it is clear they are now looking at multiple options.
