Newcastle United have been informed that a winger they were heavily linked with during the January transfer window is now available for just £17m this summer.

The Magpies are expected to be busy in the transfer window, which opened again on Monday after a short break, to fill the positions most in need of improvement.

Newcastle United are looking to add more players in several positions this summer, believed to be goalkeeper, centre-back, right-wing and striker. The right wing are most in need of bodies, however, after Eddie Howe sold Yankuba Minteh and Miguel Almiron.

The latter’s exit seemed to be best for both parties, but Howe was reluctant to sell Minteh after a promising season on loan at Feyenoord and a high ceiling.

Newcastle are interested in signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest this summer, with the feeling that he will cost around £50m. While that is a fee Newcastle can afford to pay, a new transfer report in the Netherlands has shared that a player who was heavily linked with a move to Tyneside in January will be available for just £17m.

Newcastle United told they can sign Johan Bakayoko for £17m

PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko was high on the Magpies’ list of transfer targets during the January transfer window, but sporting director Paul Mitchell was not able to get a deal over the line.

Reports at the time suggested that Bakayoko would cost Newcastle £50m, but his asking price has been slashed significantly after his form dropped off in the latter stages of the season.

While PSV won the Eredivisie on the final day of the season, Bakayoko’s game time was cut down to substitute appearances in the last few games. The 21-year-old was an unused substitute for their last game of the season, which saw them clinch the title.

According to Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagbal, the winger will be available for just £17m this summer. While form may be a catalyst to the price tag, Bakayoko’s current deal at PSV runs out in 2026, so the Rood-witten could be looking to offload him and recoup any transfer fee they can get.

A boost for Newcastle is that Bakayoko wants to move to England and is seemingly willing to run down his contract at PSV to achieve it.

Johan Bakayoko’s statistics compared to Newcastle United target Anthony Elanga

Whether it is Elanga or Bakayoko that signs, Newcastle should be safe in the knowledge that they will have two quality players on the books next season.

Elanga has interacted with Newcastle’s William Osula over the last few days after his heroics at the Under-21 European Championships. His comments have sent some fans into a frenzy, with many asking him to sign for the club in the replies.

Bakayoko appears to be keeping quiet about his future, but with so many clubs interested in a move, it is likely that he leaves the Dutch giants this summer.

For £17m, Newcastle would be able to sign Bakayoko and still have a lot of money left over to improve their other positions. A fee as low as that would help in their efforts to sign the likes of Joao Pedro and James Trafford, who could cost as much as £100m combined.

Newcastle have the perfect opportunity to sign a quality player for a bargain price tag this summer. They must jump on that chance before it is too late.
