Newcastle United star now ‘certain’ to stay next season, he told the club he didn’t want to go

Much of the talk surrounding Newcastle United of late has been focused on the future of Alexander Isak.

Still, and while there is still some debate as to whether Isak stays at Newcastle this summer, another key player looks certain to remain at St James’ Park.

Indeed, Newcastle may miss out on James Trafford after all. Newcastle have chased Trafford for what feels like an age now, but have now seen Manchester City enter the race despite talks with Burnley after having an offer rejected.

The idea that Trafford could head elsewhere is hugely frustrating. It, however, could have a positive impact on Nick Pope’s future at the club.

Nick Pope certain to stay at Newcastle United

Leeds have been linked with Pope, with the Elland Road outfit already having signed Sean Longstaff from Newcastle.

Still, Pope has told Newcastle that he wants to stay and it appears as if the 33-year-old will be getting his wish.

According to Newcastle World, Pope is now certain to stay at Newcastle this summer.

Eddie Howe has just been sent a brutal Nick Pope reminder

Pope has been a brilliant signing for Newcastle, there’s little doubt about that.

Over the course of his 95 games for the club, he’s kept 93 clean sheets.

The former Burnley stopper, however, is not without his limitations. Pope made a dreadful mistake in Newcastle’s 4-0 loss to Celtic as pre-season began for Eddie Howe’s side on Saturday.

He does not look the most capable outside of his goal or when the ball is at his feet. Signing Trafford looked like a way of developing a more possession-based style of play.

Pope is a fine goalkeeper to take into the season but, given how long Newcastle have pursued Trafford, it would be fair to suggest they wanted something different from their No.1 next season.

Pope staying is a good thing. Him starting regularly next season just might not be what the club expected.
